The Indigenous Culture Committee of Friends of Brook Park and our allied organizations United Confederation of Taino People, Kalpulli Huehuetlahtolli and including Teotl Kalli Quetzalcoatl and Maisiti Yukayeke Taino and Calpulli Atlachinolli invites you participate in a day of energetic fun when we share together to attend to all the things we need to do to be able to host the activities and events we know and love!

Brook Park
On June 4th Saturday

Work and skills sharing from 11-3PM
3-5PM food and music that we all bring together. So bring something!

We will be doing a number of things, and you can participate in all or some. We see many folks for our Indigenous Culture Events and activities, but only a portion of those attendees have had the great opportunity in the preparation or clean-up of these vital events. Let’s get together in the park and share these essential aspects of our success, and bring some potluck food to share! And some instruments!

For those who cannot share with us on that day in person, you can always do something before that day. Or you can donate resources online here: http://friendsofbrookpark.org

Also, you can encourage your friends and family and organizations to participate too!

WHO? Friends of Brook Park (FOBP), a 501c3 community group working in Mott Haven and Port Morris, the Bronx

WHAT? FOBP was awarded a grant of $100,000 in funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) through a “Greening the Bronx” grant to plant new street trees in Port Morris and Mott Haven. In the first planting season (Spring 2010), the first 17 trees were planted. In Fall 2010, 30 more trees went into the ground. The trees in the most recent planting are just starting to bloom, beautifully.

WHEN? The 47 trees have all been planted. Urban Garden Center will maintain the trees for a guarantee period of two years, with some help from Friends of Brook Park volunteers.

WHERE? Street trees are located principally along 138th Street between the Bruckner Expressway and the Major Deegan Expressway, and also on 137th Street, 134th Street, and on St. Ann’s Place.

WHY? This funding from NYSERDA supports a study on the influence of shade on reducing the Heat Island Effect.
_____________________________________________________________________________

Friends Of Brook Park (FOBP) received a total of $95,000 in funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority through their “Greening the Bronx” grant to plant street trees in impervious sites in the Bronx’s Mott Haven and Port Morris neighborhoods. We are working in partnership with two key subcontractor partners — Our Project Manager is Landscape Architect Jeff Keiter. Our Tree Contractor is Dimitri Gatanas of Urban Garden Center, LLC. We receive the final $5,000 from NYSERDA two years after the final planting.

A total of 47 street trees were sited where there were few or no trees before the efforts of the NYC’s Million Tree Project began. These trees will help offset the pollution of passing traffic and to help absorb gases from the nearby Major Deegan and Bruckner Expressways. Property owners near the trees will benefit from increased property values, cooler thoroughfares, and the borough will enjoy a more beautiful, healthier Bronx.

FOBP, a community-based 501c3 organization, is a coalition of residents, parents, educators, workers, and home and/or business owners dedicated to managing and revitalizing green spaces. For an overview of what FOBP does, and what we have achieved, please see our website.

Tree care volunteers may email Carol carolATfriendsofbrookpark.org

Letter of Support for High Bridge

Robert Tierney, Chairman
Landmarks Preservation Commission
Municipal Bldg., 9th floor
1 Centre St.
New York, NY 10007

Dear Mr. Tierney,

This letter is in regards to your consideration of the  High Bridge – High Bridge, Aqueduct and Pedestrian Walk.  We STRONGLY SUPPORT A LOW railing.

It would be very discriminatory to have a prison like railing for us in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan when other communities, like the Upper East Side promenade along Gracie Mansion and the East River, enjoy the sort of aesthetically pleasing and safe railing we seek.

Test Well Drilling progress!

What a HUGE step!
Thanks to the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation and support from Council Member Viverito, gaining data and information to inform the final design of our historic brook restoration initiative. Drilling for test Wells for Brook Restoration

The Brook Restoration project includes planning a wetland system in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx with native plantings to support fauna, similar to the natural brook that ran through the park in the late 1800’s. Rainwater harvesting from adjacent buildings will be diverted from the combined-sewer to an above ground cistern for irrigation, and below-grade cisterns used to maintain water levels in the wetland.
Test Well
The study phase of this exciting effort is funded through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) South Bronx Waterfront Partnership funded by Congressman José E. Serrano and managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). We welcome your support and ideas as to how to obtain the resources necessary to implement.

We are seeking implementation funding, and you can be a part of it!
